CONNECT GROUPS“In the forest supporting each other, the trees laugh at the hurricane” Charles Spurgeon As a church grows, its ability to provide an environment for friendships to be formed and personal care is challenged. Harvest Christian Church has a network of leaders who have opened up their homes where up to a dozen people can gather. These are primarily referred to as connect groups or cell groups, giving people a chance to build friendships, practically meeting one another’s needs, encouraging each others potential and gaining a greater understanding of the Bible. Bob Russell, Pastor of South East Christian Church 15000 people strong illustrates the value and importance of peoples lives being connected to one another. (‘When God Builds a Church’ on pg:226). He refers to the giant redwood trees in California. “They are hundreds of feet high and so large at the trunk that our family of four, holding hands, couldn’t reach all the way around the base of one. You would think that such trees would have such a massive root system. But compared to other trees, the redwoods don’t have many roots, and they don’t go very deep. Yet those trees have stood for centuries because the roots of the trees are interwoven with each other. They have stood against the storms because they are literally holding each other up”. The story of the trees sounds all too familiar to the type of dynamic that the early Christians experienced in Acts 4: 32-47. “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had…There were no needy persons among them...they broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of the people.”
